A very interesting wide collection of subject matter. It's very easy to tell that the author put a tremendous amount of research into this. Great read for the naturally curious.
Musings of a Modern Man is a veritable treasure trove of 49 in-depth essays on topics that span a very broad gamut from philosophy to technology, from music to mathematics, from art to computer science, from history to data security, and from literature to business.
The author, Robert Milton Underwood, Jr., exhibits an exceptional ability to combine clear communication with thorough research and documentation so that with each essay, the reader comes away with both a rich understanding of the material presented as well as a desire to look at some of the source material cited by the author in order to gain additional insight. Mr. Underwood has the unique gift for making unfamiliar subjects come alive, and he uses this gift to lead the reader on numerous intellectual voyages to ideas and concepts previously unexplored. I even found myself being fascinated by the nuances of a data storage solution known as WORM technology after reading the author’s cogent arguments for its comparative assets.
Of particular interest to me were the articles on Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony and Diego Velazquez’s Las Meninas, but I also gained a wealth of insights from Mr. Underwood’s study of an analysis of a passage in the New Testament book of Hebrews, a discussion of the illness that most likely caused Van Gogh’s demise, an analysis of Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Sharer, and many, many more of the myriad topics covered in Musings of a Modern Man.
This book has become a permanent part of my home library, and I find myself returning to it frequently for perspectives on historical and current issues.
