It has many of the elements of a good thriller: interesting locales, characters with hidden layers of character, intrigues and shoot-'em-up scenes. What is lacks is a content editor and a copy editor with the courage to say it doesn't work as it is.The characters aren't substantive enough to care about them, and the plot is contrived in ways that aren't believable. There are intrusions of facts that are so abrupt that they intrude rather than explain.
On top of those weaknesses are inexcusable grammatical errors, almost-homonyms substituted for correct word choices and typographical errors. The use of triple spacing between paragraphs is intended to give the appearance of a more substantive book, but simply looks like the obvious device it is.
All in all, it's a cheap book that sells at a cheap price.

With the Cheetah, Robert Walker has created a character of depth and complexity, brooding and dashing, that the reader quickly comes to care about. As he becomes entangled with bad guys and innocent bystanders in both hemispheres, Walker has a chance to create descriptively stirring scenes; it becomes clear he has soaked up the nuances of his locales. The reader soon feels the fierce danger of the Cheetah's struggles with the antagonists mirrored by the dangerous beauty of the settings. Walker paints this enigmatic man at ease with European elegance in terrain and recreation and food-- he takes you there and leaves you wanting more.
I loved your book. I think I read it in about 3 hours. I simply could not put it down. I tried, but kept picking it back up. It was fast paced with very little "dead-time". It's hard to not have dead-time during the plot building portions.
I especially liked your visual descriptions. Since I cannot hear, I am a very visual person and I see or notice things that most people don't see. You see things like I do, noticing all kinds of little details. I could "see" the whole story. I felt like I was there, watching it all happen. Sometimes I felt like I could even smell the scenery. You're very good at that.
I look forward to reading your next book. I assume you are working on something. I suspect you would have a hard time being quiet with the pen.
This was a really fun book. It immediately took you into its world of intrigue, espionage and adventure. It explores ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances and people who know no limits. Rogue is extreme, while endearing. Be careful not to pick friends who might be foes, because ONLY the author knows! Fantasy meets reality in a way that will make you question conventional thought. It will also make you want to visit the lands described, just to see if the visuals described are as vibrant as they appear. Don't overlook this opportunity to enrich your imagination, meet some new friends and make you suspicious of apparently "normal" circumstances. Geronimo! And don't forget to pull your ripcord... I can't wait for the next novel to pickup with the adventure, with those that survived the Rogue.
A pretty good first effort, Mr. Walker! I really liked Hector, and I would like to see him again in some future project. I'd love to know the derivation/significance of his nickname "Cheetah" and the circumstances of the tattoo.
I thought Baron and Hector were well-drawn characters, the women and incidental characters less so. I thought the ending was great - very exciting! I think it hooked the reader from the start, and it kept my interest to the end - I really wanted to know what was going to happen, and the characters were sufficiently developed for me to care what happened to them.
I could do without a steady stream of physically perfect female specimens, but I recognize that they are an integral part of male fantasy-land. A little gratuitous sex sells books, and this wasn't obnoxiously gratuitous.
Negatives I think Walker needs to work on dialogue. He sets all the various scenes very well, so I always had a very detailed mental image of the physical location - the café, Regina's castle, etc. But dialogue sounded cliched and trite from some of the characters, some of the time, and it was jarring, because it didn't match the quality of everything else. Not from Hector or Baron so much, but from the other characters, as I mentioned above.
But over all, I enjoyed it enough that I am purchasing two more books to give away as Christmas presents!
Although this type of story is not my favorite subject matter, the murder mystery did keep my interest. I knew the author from working with him in Estes Park in the summer of 1968 and wanted to read his book. I would recommend this as a good read for those who enjoy a suspence that takes place from Texas, over to Europe, and also in the Yucatan jungle. Most guys would love this bloody thriller.
What a great book by Robert Walker. It starts with a bang and I was hooked from the start. Having been absorbed into the book, I finished it in two days. Now I can't wait to see if he brings us more. The characters and places seem so real. Great research kept many things covered in the story real and factual.
Would definitely recommend this one.
Creeping through the water soaked jungles of the Yucatan, tossed out of a perfectly good plane, a little dancing and romancing, smoke and mirrors, beautiful people to lure your unsuspecting mind, gunfire raining down around you while pausing to rethink the meaning of your sparkling (small) diamond ring.
If you like a great story with twist and turns, a multitude of characters to lure you into the thick of the story BUY this book/ebook. Great Movie Material.
Just when you think you have it figured out.... bam....another twist, more action, the smell, texture and feel of the characters surroundings will draw you in, you wont even realize you're holding your breath. Did I mention BAM?
